First of all, I really am not all that firm of a believer in capital punishment, and then when this is the kind of punishment that was given for crimes, it is just unexceptable. What's worse is thinking that a majority of the African-Americans who were lynched probably weren't guilty of their crimes. While doing my research paper on the Ku Klux Klan in the South, I found out that many times the Ku Klux Klan had threatened the jury to vote "guilty", or otherwise something would happen to the jury's family.

Lynching is bad as it is, but then the fact that lynching served as a social event for the white americans, it becomes grotesque. Looking at all the people who were present for the lynching of Jesse Washington, I couldn't help but thinking that with all those people it looks more like the county fair. I can honestly say that I'm ashamed of my ancestors for the way that they took part in these events. I know that they were living in a society where this seemed right, but it is hard for me to believe that not one person could stand up and say that lynching and the social aspect it brought just weren't acceptable.

As far as novels, such as Beloved and Native Son, and poems go I believe that they form an image in our head about how horrid African Americans were treated, and they also provide an emotional aspect. In Beloved, Sethe's back is described as a "chokecherry tree", which gives us a visual image of just how bad the scars are that Sethe received by Schoolteacher. In Beloved, we also can see just how bad the effects of slavery had on Sethe emotionally. Although these novels and poems provide us with an imaginary image and also a sense of what the victims were feeling, it is nothing compared to what happens when I look at these pictures. In these pictures, I see just how horendous these crimes were, and I realize that what these people must have gone through is beyond imagination.

this is a test...
